When you finish reading this text, you will understand how the DMX and because the world of illumination established as a DMX as standard communication protocol. For a more technical and detailed explanation, please visit the website www.dmx512-online.com
1. The need for a standard
20 years ago, most manufacturers and lighting consoles had their own communication protocols. During the installation process was necessary to use all the lights from the same manufacturer. If you wanted to use different lighting equipment from different manufacturers (even simple dimmers), each group needed their own lighting console. It was clear that it needed a standard communication between controllers and equipment.
The DMX was adapted as the standard, perhaps because it was the most versatile and reliable at the time. Today it is possible for a driver, as LumiDesk, communicate with thousands and various lighting equipment, manufactured in different parts of the world.
2. Understanding DMX
To understand the communication protocol DMX 512 (commonly referred to as DMX), we use the analogy of cable TV.
Imagine a single cable television system, with only 4 relevant parts:
a) TV Station.
b) Cable.
c) decoder.
d) TV.
The TV station broadcasts a signal through a cable network until it reaches the decoder. The decoder receives information from hundreds of channels, but only displays the information on TV (in this case audio and video) the only channel that was chosen. The TV ignores the information channels that are not elected. Only displays the selected channel information at the decoder.
DMX can be related to the cable television system, wherein:
a) The TV station is the controller Lumidesk.
b) The cable is a DMX cable.
c) The cable box is a DMX decoder (which is usually found within each lighting equipment)
d) The TV is the lighting equipment.
In DMX, the number of channels that are issued is always 512, maybe some are empty or not used, but still are issued as they are basic components of the standard.
So, the controller sends a signal (512 channels of information) which can travel through the DMX cable until it reaches the decoder within the lighting team. In the same way you put a channel on TV on a computer lighting sets the channel you want your lighting equipment deployment information. This is known as the DMX address
In other words, if I set my lamp for channel 21, then the direction of my luminaire DMX is 21. Both expressions are common in the world of enlightenment.
Example
Imagine that we have a DMX dimmer that controls a single light bulb. The DMX address of the bulb is set to 21, so the only lighting equipment will receive information from channel 21 and ignore the rest.
We have a controller that sends signals through the DMX cable and this cable goes to the decoder (the dimmer DMX) which receives the signal. So, if the controller sends the signal power on channel 21, the dimmer will turn on the light bulb.
Conventional lighting equipment (dimmers simple) require only 1 channel of information. HOWEVER, intelligent lighting equipment require more than 1 channel to work, for example if I have a team of lighting that requires 5 channels of information, and its DMX address is 21 (again, the address is the channel used by the team) , then this team will use the computers 21,22,23,24 and 25. The decoder knows the team needs 5 channels of information, so I decode 5 channels and ignore the rest. The driver knows the team also uses 5 channels, so I send 5 channels of information.
Example
Imagine having a simple robotic heads using 5 channels:
1. bread.
2. tilt.
3. color wheel.
4. gobo wheel.
5. dimmer.
Has set its direction to the movable head 21 and tells his driver that has this particular movable head in the direction 21. The controller will then know that channel 23 corresponds to the color wheel, for example. If you want to change the color of the light beam, you tell the driver the color you want, the controller sends this information through the channel 23, and the lighting team acts in accordance to this information.
Typically, intelligent lighting equipment using 1 channel (sometimes more) for performing each function (color, gobo, prism, dimmer, etc..) Certain mobile robotic heads using more than 20 channels, and some use simple 4-channel scanners, etc. .
3. The protocol
So far we have referred to the information travels over the DMX cable from the controller to the decoder within the luminaire. This information is nothing but a number between 0 and 255. This number is called DMX value for a particular channel. Then, the DMX signal is but values over 512 channels.
Example:
Back to our simple 5-channel robotic head, the channel 3 controls the color wheel, which has 25 different color combinations. The color depends on the value displayed in the channel DMX 3 (in the manner in which this ordering the driver) as follows:
White 0-10
Red 11-20
21-30 Purple
.
.
.
Color x 241-255
So, if the lighting equipment receives a DMX value of 25 for channel 3, will display the color purple. If the DMX value change to 15 automatically switches to red and so consequently.
Fortunately for us, LumiDesk software (and most of the drivers) include profiles for lighting equipment. These profiles contain all DMX values and channel information needed to have complete control of their lighting equipment. Typically, all you have to do is set DMX addresses properly, and the controller make it easy the rest (some drivers are easier to learn and use, but that's the general idea)
When a lighting equipment is manufactured, a DMX chart is provided along with the user manual. DMX This table contains all the information that manufacturers of drivers need to create these profiles. Most of the drivers contain the profiles of the most popular teams in a particular market. LumiDesk proudly affirm that (and our co-OEM) are the only drivers with 2,000 profiles of manufacturers around the world, so it does not matter where you purchased your lighting equipment, chances are we've got profiles for the team, which allows you to control it without any problem.
